Questions for Everyone

What is The Analysis Exchange?

The Analysis Exchange is an online marketplace for Web Analytics resources. The initial launch is designed for non-profit and non-governmental organizations (NGO’s) to gain access to Web Analytics students and mentors who will deliver project-based analysis.

How does The Analysis Exchange work?

There are three parties that come together for each Analysis Exchange project:

  • Organizations submit a project for analysis resources
  • Students are matched with projects based on their individual skills
  • Mentors are assigned to collaborate with students on every project

Projects will be defined using clear goals, explicit expectations and estimated timelines to ensure the greatest success for all involved. Students and mentors will present the results of their analysis to the Organization. Upon completion of each project, all parties will submit feedback on the project, results and participants.

What are the expectations of participants in The Analysis Exchange?

If you're interested in becoming an active participant in The Analysis Exchange, please take the time to download and read our "Opportunities and Expectations" Handbook (PDF). This document tries to answer lots of the questions you might have about The Analysis Exchange!

How does The Analysis Exchange protect data privacy?

Every Analysis Exchange participant is required to accept our Terms of Service that govern the use and sharing of all data used in our projects. Everyone is encouraged to review our Terms of Service in advance of joining Analysis Exchange or creating a project.

Are their Non-Disclosure Agreements (NDAs) that need to be signed?

Only if the organizational partner requires it, and only if the mentor and student agree to sign one. Analysis Exchange only requires participants to agree to our Terms of Service. If an organization requires a NDA they should declare this need in advance as part of the mentor and student selection process. Since the Analysis Exchange entity and Web Analytics Demystified are never privy to the details of these projects we cannot sign an NDA or any governing agreement.

What do Analysis Exchange results look like?

The work product from Analysis Exchange projects is a story about an opportunity for our nonprofit partners and their web sites, told to them by our students with the help our our mentors. We encourage these stories to be told using presentation tools like Powerpoint, and we have an example of Analysis Exchange project results produced for PBS by one of our early teams.

Is The Analysis Exchange open to anyone?

Yes, it is open to everyone! Any individual wishing to learn or teach web analytics is invited to participate. There are no "membership fees" or dues or costs of any kind, none. The only limitation is that organizational members are limited to nonprofit and non-governmental groups. If you have questions about whether your group qualifies please send us email!

How much does it cost to participate in The Analysis Exchange?

There is no cost to participate in The Analysis Exchange program. Qualifying organizations will receive voluntary analysis from both students and mentors.

I heard Analysis Exchange gives away money to its members. Is that true?

Yes! In 2012 we established the Analysis Exchange Scholarship Fund to help our members do more in the digital measurement community. You can read more about this first-of-its-kind effort on the Analysis Exchange Scholarship page.

Who benefits from The Analysis Exchange?

Everyone! The Analysis Exchange helps Organizations by providing access to a global network of students and mentors who provide basic Web Analytics analysis at no cost. Students benefit from gaining access to real world business problems and live Web Analytics data sets. Mentors benefit from delivering guidance to new Web Analysts and gaining exposure to new analytical challenges. Most importantly, the entire Web Analytics industry benefits from more analysis, growing skills and greater visibility of online data throughout organizations across the globe.

Who is responsible for creating The Analysis Exchange?

The Analysis Exchange is a marketplace developed by Web Analytics Demystified and our trusted business partners. The goals for this initiative are: to help demonstrate the value of Web Analytics to organizations across the globe; to elevate practical understanding of data-driven success; and to train the “next wave” in Web Analytics professionals.

Is The Analysis Exchange a Web Analytics Association project?

No. The Analysis Exchange has nothing to do with the Web Analytics Association who does have a similar effort underway to serve a single organization. Unlike the Association's effort, The Analysis Exchange is open to everyone and does not cost anything to participate. More information about the Association's effort is available via their web site.

Is The Analysis Exchange related to the X Change conference?

Questions for Experienced Web Analysts (Mentors)

What qualifications should a Mentor have?

Mentors in The Analysis Exchange should have at least a few years of direct experience in the web analytics field. Ideally mentors will have lots of experience producing analysis and presenting it to their management team or leadership since this is the primary skill we're trying to teach and provide.

What is expected of Mentors who participate in The Analysis Exchange?

Analysis Exchange Mentors are expected to help students by offering guidance and advice on how to approach an analysis project, what metrics are important to evaluate and why the organization should take action. Mentors will bring Web Analytics expertise to each project to ensure quality analysis and actionable recommendations. Mentors can volunteer to help on multiple projects, but should estimate a time commitment of approximately two to three (2 to 3) hours of work for each project.

Questions for New Web Analysts (Students)

If I'm not in school or just out, can I still be a student?

Absolutely! By "student" we mean "student of web analytics" without regard to age or stage in life. We are looking for people with a passion for and interest in web analytics, nothing more! It will help to have read some good books on web analytics and maybe read a few web analytics blogs but otherwise we're looking for motivated people.

What is expected of Students who participate in The Analysis Exchange?

Analysis Exchange Students are expected to bring a strong desire to learn about Web Analytics, a curiosity for exploring online data and a willingness to accept constructive feedback. No Web Analytics experience is required to participate and students will be matched with projects that meet their individual skill level. Students can volunteer to participate on one project at a time and should estimate a time commitment of approximately eight to ten (8 to 10) hours of work for each project.
